iSCSI: What is it?

Pronounced eye skuzzy. Short for Internet SCSI, an IP-based standard for linking data storage devices over a network and transferring data by carrying SCSI commands over IP networks. iSCSI supports a Gigabit Ethernet interface at the physical layer, which allows systems supporting iSCSI interfaces to connect directly to standard Gigabit Ethernet switches and/or IP routers. When an operating system receives a request it generates the SCSI command and then sends an IP packet over an Ethernet connection. At the receiving end, the SCSI commands are separated from the request, and the SCSI commands and data are sent to the SCSI controller and then to the SCSI storage device. iSCSI will also return a response to the request using the same protocol.

iSCSI is important to SAN technology because it enables a SAN to be deployed in a LAN, WAN or MAN.

iSCSI was developed by the IETF and became an official standard in February 2003.

Definition from Webopedia.

From the SCSI Library.

The Connexan Enterprise iSCSI Target (CiT) is the foundation of Connexan’s Systems and Storage Virtualization strategy. The CiT is supported on IBM System x Servers and IBM DS3000 and DS4000 Storage offerings. While iSCSI is just now beginning to get mainstream attention, Connexan has been using and installing iSCSI solutions at our customers for several years now.

The CiT, in conjunction with IBM’s best-of-breed hardware technology, bridges a gap in the storage industry. While there are many fine storage offerings, they are based on integrated, closed and usually costly storage systems. The scalability of these offerings is pre-defined when they are purchased and limited to those specifications.[1]

Unlike many proprietary iSCSI storage offerings, the Connexan Enterprise iSCSI Target is designed to adhere to industry standard specifications and work on a vast array of Enterprise-class Servers and Storage. Connexan is partnered with and certified on VMware’s VI3 virtualization platform, Microsoft’s Windows Server™ platform, as well as QLogic’s iSCSI HBAs.

By embracing and supporting industry-standards, and through architectural design and testing, Connexan is able to offer a solution that will scale to 2 petabytes (PB) and beyond.

The cost of storage solutions based on the Connexan Enterprise iSCSI Target is extremely low in comparison to traditional integrated storage solutions based on Fibre Channel, SSA and iSCSI. CiT solutions are all based on Enterprise-class hard drives. Connexan does not recommend or sell SATA solutions for mission-critical applications in the datacenter. In fact, CiT-based solutions are less-expensive per gigabyte than most shared SATA solutions which have poor performance, mediocre reliability, and do not scale (well) at all.

Connexan is the only VMware VDI Alliance Partner offering a customizable, scalable (2 petabytes), iSCSI storage solution as part of our Virtual Desktop Solution (VDS).

[1] Increased drive capacity and system updates may sometimes allow integrated systems to scale beyond their original specification, but still with significant limitations.
